Aiyana Gunjan

Contemporary Artist, Calligrapher and Semiotician

Aiyana Gunjan, a Delhi-based contemporary Indian artist, uses calligraphy as a primary tool of self-expression. She has been investigating the self, and the personal, to arrive at truths about the pluralism of Indian culture. Her calligraphic multimedia works are an exploration of innovation as she marries calligraphy to various new mediums photography, glass printing, pastels, and watercolours, in the quest for her identity and to evoke universal themes about spirituality, the self,  and her own art  practice. Transforming the art of calligraphy from religious into non-religious spaces, to a more secular, artistic and personal space is evident in the oeuvre.

Thriving at the intersection of art, semiotics, and creativity, Aiyana Gunjan weaves narratives that bridge material and spiritual, specific and universal, individual and culture.

ARTIST STATEMENT

I paint, not to decorate walls, but to break the walls within. My artistic journey is a quest to transcend boundaries and connect with the essence of life. A life-changing experience brought me closer to the depth and expanse of existence, transcending the limits of logic and awakening my creative soul. My spiritual journey, rather than formal art education, has been my guiding light as an artist. My artistic practice is an act of surrendering to the intuitive flow of life, with the mind as a humble servant. Through the calligraphy strokes, I seek to touch the spiritual essence present across diverse religious texts, embodying the spirit of Oneness. This ongoing journey continuously inspires and propels me forward, regardless of challenges. For me, this embodies the essence of art, life, and creativity.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Calligraphy is truly ME. Captivated by the dynamic beauty of the calligraphy stroke, I was inspired to push its traditional boundaries. My artistic practice involves exploring diverse mediums such as calligraphy, painting, and music, in pursuit of new perspectives. Through my work, I’ve taken traditional calligraphy into the universal language of contemporary art.

I find a world of expression in each calligraphy stroke—the flow, the beauty, the statement; each stroke is complete in itself, with a definite beginning and end, like the breath of life. Stroke by stroke, I paint, seeking perspective and momentum, with my oblique-cut-nib pen as my brush.

The freedom that fine arts affords me to experiment with mediums and forms is invaluable. Painting, photography, printing, sitar, pottery, and origami serve as secondary layers to my artistic expression, with calligraphy as my primary discipline.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Cultural Symbols of Sound Language poses no barrier to my exploration of beauty and flow in calligraphy strokes across different scripts—whether it’s the graceful curves of Hebrew, the geometric precision of Korean, or the intricate ‘pin-man’ script of Brahmi.

Despite not knowing the languages, I found inspiration in the insight that alphabets serve as symbols representing universal sounds across diverse cultures— the ‘cultural symbol of sound’. This insight led me to reinterpret letters as musical notes, drawing from my passion for music, and thereby uniting different calligraphy forms in music. Indeed, music transcends language.

ARTIST STATEMENT

United in Music With my background in Indian classical music, particularly on the Sitar, I found myself immersed in a vast ocean of musical notations, all inscribed within the framework of the seven musical notes. Eureka! I could simply write the seven alphabets from different scripts such as Hebrew, Korean, Hindi, and English, each symbolizing a distinct sound of music. As I paint with my calligraphy forms, the essence of music flows through my work. This realization marks a significant milestone in my artistic journey, a point of synthesis and development.

ARTIST STATEMENT

Inspired by my immersion in pottery, I asked myself – why should my paper be flat? In search of the third dimension, I found light in the origami folds. Working with the ‘mouldable’ paper, I learned that each fold adds strength and memory to the paper, opening up a new 3D expression in ‘paper sculpting’.

While she devoted eighteen years of her life to working in advertising, she has always felt a strong connection to the arts. Her interests spanned disciplines as she trained under eminent gurus – Shobha Broota in painting, Anis Siddiqui in calligraphy and Subrata De in sitar and Indian Classical Music.

This crisscrossing has had a profound effect on her artworks, bringing in an intra-disciplinary approach to her artistic practice, in addition to an idealised innovativeness (from her time spent working in the advertising world) as well as a profound sense of spirituality stemming from her deep thirst to learn more about the human condition which establishes her singular vocabulary, too.

aiyana gunjan about

She has educated herself and used self-knowledge to open her mind and her heart to the universe, to sacred and personal spaces.  It is this trajectory of thought and philosophy of transience which is fuelling her language of art. She has incorporated all other parallel disciplines she has been practising along with her art. Her interest in music, calligraphy, design, prose and poetry has enriched her and is reflected in her art.

For Aiyana, her art has been a necessity, a compulsion of the soul. It is a discipline which is so therapeutic yet spiritual. This discipline gives her joy which is the core of her well-being. Her dedication and aspiration for understanding all arts have developed her perception, intense passion and untiring capacity to work with love and devotion.

“I choose to walk where my heart takes me. I listen to my voice and pursue it without limitations and boundaries. I believe in the Power of Now, exploring new territories, and expanding my horizon”.

TESTIMONIALS

It is so wonderful to see the work you have done on Auroville & your overall creation in life, with its varied aspects. The analysis that is reflected in your art is based on not just an artistic fervour but an in-depth view of cognitive processes, I must say. You have been trying to catch the waves, thought processes as well as sharing on common norms and values, imbibed inside, that is culture. Your depiction is on socio-cultural, indeed, and it doesn’t or it can’t exclude or neglect the human interaction. Hats off to your expressing the inner or sub-surface world, within world, and exhibiting the same through different idioms and mediums. The artistic view can be understood well with a little help from you, no doubt but once that happens, every line, symbol or color with mincing of words, come out as abhivyakti in itself. Even amidst the hectic activity, why life, that we get ourselves bound to, an introduction to or a view of your picturesque presentation, no doubt is a breathing space…why even a soothing touch, real yet elusive.

SHOBHA BROOTA – Senior Artist, Art Educationist

TESTIMONIALS

Aiyana’s natural intellectual curiosity and ability to distil large amounts of information into interesting insights were hugely valuable to us on two international projects, looking at ‘refreshments’ and ‘innovation’ in India.

Like-able, warm and emotionally intelligent Aiyana is a talented cultural detective with the ability to sift through huge swathes of information and spot what others might overlook. She can take small shoots and nurture them into persuasive insight. She’s also committed, thorough and nice to work with. I found her to be enthusiastic, full of great ideas, helpful and used tremendous initiative on both projects.

JOHN MURPHY – CEO and Founder TRUCKK, UK

TESTIMONIALS

Aiyana Gunjan is a rare artist, aesthete and scholar who beautifully combines analytics with artistry and logic with eloquence. Her artworks signify a profound distillation of esoteric meanings and lived life experiences, they are no mere markings on paper or cloth but speak of rhythms and cadences that are as ancient as time itself, as precious as life itself. I am always looking forward to what Aiyana has to offer next.

MINHAZZ MAJUMDAR – Writer and Curator of Indian Art

TESTIMONIALS

Since the first day of interaction with calligraphy, Aiyana Gunjan learnt and commanded the flow and restriction of calligraphy strokes very well and quickly. She also commanded the calligraphy pen very swiftly.  Later on, I too was amazed looking at the progress of my disciple. Aiyana Gunjan was not one of them whose passion for calligraphy diluted with time; rather it became more compassionate and meditative with the improvements and the experiments later. The best part of Aiyana Gunjan’s calligraphy classes is that she made all the progress by dint of both enthusiasm and dexterity.  And it all came to the fore by the sheer level of passion she still possesses.

ANIS SIDDIQUE – Calligraphy Guru

TESTIMONIALS

Aiyana is a self-taught artist who took up the calligraphy pen and explored it in its myriad manifestations. She has taken calligraphy to the level of fine art and created a body of work,

which is deeply spiritual, secular and inward-looking. Her works speak the language of meditative silence and move along the contours of her personal space. The title of the show The Moving Finger is inspired by Omar Khayyam’s poem Rubaiyat and captures the essence of Aiyana’s highly introspective work.

DR ALKA PANDE – Indian Academic, Author and Museum Curator

TESTIMONIALS

Aiyana is a brilliant semiotician and I am deeply impressed by her decoding of Auroville’s cultural codes. It is very insightful and useful in understanding the creative and formative tensions that underlie a culture and generate its cultural patterns.

MANOJ PAVITRAN – Design Thinking, Intergral Education Auroville
